If you have recently purchased this brand of tuna from the grocery store:
H-E-B label, Van Camp's, Genova, Trader Joe's from these states:
(fda.gov)
DO NOT EAT THEM.
As of February 07, 2025 TRI-UNION SEAFOODS, LLC., who is also the manufacturer and distributor of the “Chicken of the sea” brand has voluntarily released a public warning about their tuna cans. They report that they have a manufacturing defect on their product seal causing leaks (fda.gov).
These leaks could attract the clostridium botulinum bacteria strain, which can cause FATAL food poisoning.
This bacteria grows in conditions with low oxygen, which means “improperly home-canned or fermented foods” of vegetables and meats can be the perfect place for this bacteria to live (cdc.gov, fsis.usda.gov).
If ingested this bacteria can cause illness, or even death. If you suspect that you have one of these products, you can double check the bottom of the can for the UPC number to make sure. If you have one of these cans, it is advised to return to the retailer for a full refund, dispose of it, or to contact Tri-Union Seafoods LLC directly (fda.gov).
As of today, February 11, 2025, there are no reported deaths or illnesses, and Tri-Union Seafoods claims their other products are not contaminated.
